Personal introductions, outline of next three
days (or single day as appropriate), personal objectives for the course, how this stage links to stage two & three, then general discussions
in workgroups about their thoughts as to 'Leadership' qualities and the challenges facing
Team Leaders/ Supervisors today and into the future.
Module 1: You & your Organisation:
Video-based case study of three Team
Leaders, filmed in the workplace, which acts as a discussion-starter.
Module 1: Role of
Supervision:
The different roles Team Leaders play in their positions - Coach, Leader, Counsellor, Trainer, Delegator etc and how each person will have a different mix of these roles. A look at the wider context of their own position not just within the company, but within the Industrial/Economic context generally.
Module 1: Communication:
Through practical exercises, the advantages/disadvantages of written & verbal comms, open & closed questioning techniques, restatement, quick look at body language, barriers filters & screens, reaching true understanding.
Module 1: Leadership:
Workgroup discussion of Leader qualities, self-analysis of own leadership style, discussion of theoretical concepts (Managerial Grid, Likert Scale). Discussion of modern
Leadership followed by workgroup exercises.
Module 2: Goal-setting:
Goal-setting in a team environment, performance improvement methods, negotiating agreed goals rather than imposed goals.
Module 2: Motivation:
Workgroup discussion that looks at the need to identify motivational factors on an individual basis, that money is only one of a range of motivators, and the theories of human motivation. Self & group analysis illustrates difference in motivators.
Module 2: Disciplinary:
Overview of the need to formulate & follow a standard procedure that provides for fair treatment of all staff through a process possibly leading to termination, and what can happen in Court if you don't.
Module 2: Industrial Relations Case Study:
Helps reinforce the messages of the Disciplinary session, allows the team to role-play through a realistic scenario of unfair dismissal, leading to a mediation meeting.
Module 3: Active Supervision:
Workgroup discussion on Managing By Walking Around, where
Team Leaders need to be visible and have an active presence in the work area, and have daily involvement with their workers, instead of sitting in their offices all day.
Module 3: Time Management:
The essential basics of TM as related to the position of Team Leader/Supervisor, mainly in terms of self-organisation and prioritisation of workload, and the organisation of tasks into related groups of activities.

Module 3:
Problem-Solving:
Looks at the need for Team Leaders to consider & treat problems in a structured way, using simple techniques and tools such as flow charts, decision trees & mind-mapping. Concludes with a practical team exercise in Creative Problem Solving that requires lateral thinking, a structured approach and a team effort.
Module 3: Summary & Close:

A review of the content, feedback from the team on area of most impact, action plans for return to work, formal written evaluation of course, and close.
