GALANT

Galant VR4 From 19 87 to late 1991 Mitsubishi released the Galant at the same time they released a turbo variant known as the VR4.  The galant is bascily a 4 door sallon and in the Vr4's case with a fairly 'big' motor.  The Galant featured the 4G63 inline 4cy turbo which today is still used in the Lancer Evolution's.

I was fortunate enough to own a 91 VR4 Evolution.  This was one of Mitsubishi's homologation  specials for rally use. My model was the GSR model which had a complete interior + electrics the RS has poor quality seats no air con or electric windows for weight reduction reasons. The RS and Evo model came with a much bigger turbo than the standard model a uprated cooling system including thicker intercooler and a oil cooler.  Bigger plumbing over the base model and a 'streight cut' close ratio gearbox.

The level of perfromance offerd by the VR4 astonishing in comparison to my last car a EP82 Starlet GT (1.3 DOHC TURBO)

unfortunately one sunny afternoon on a gravel  road i managed to write the car off.  i was not a happy chappy.

One great thing with the Galant is its compatibility with the later model Lancer.  When Mitsubishi developed the Lancer Evolution they borrowed the  VR4 RS engine and driveline.

Fortunatly for us (GSR owners) the 4G63 from a Galant VR4 Or Lancer Evolution will drop onto the existing engine mounts bar one, whcih can be sourced from a naturally aspirated Lancer.  Also the TD05 from Galants and Evo's will bolt onto the standard exhaust manifold with minor modification of the oil line.
