History
Sudoku is a puzzle game which challenges logical and
perceptual skills. Sudoku requires you to visually scan
rows, columns and regions, ensuring that there is no repetition.
To solve the puzzle successfully you need to predetermine
whether your selected
number fits into the puzzle, while
ensuring there is no repetition within rows, columns
or regions.
The word Su-doku in japanese means single number. It is
taken from the Kanji - Su meaning number and doku meaning
single. Sudoku originated in 18th century Europe. The puzzle
was devised by blind Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler.
Euler invented the puzzle in 1783, before he died at 71. The
puzzle was first published in New York in the 1970s by Dell,
in Math Puzzles and Logic problems.
Sudoku was published by Nikoli in japan in 1986, and became immensely
popular. Sudoku's popularity has grown quickly and it has recently been
declared the new Rubric Cube. Newspaper versions of Sudoku are available
in American, New Zealand, Britain and Japan. This version is based upon
the 1986 Japanese version.
