New Zealand Beech Ltd has obtained marketing and supply contracts to the 3 largest indigenous forest estates under sustainable management in New Zealand. These include, a government owned estate on the west coast of the south island, a Maori (Native New Zealand peoples) owned estate in the lower South Island and the largest privately owed estate which is situated on the eastern side of the North Island. See Map
These estates cover some 94,000 Ha of indigenous beech forest with an annual production of approxiamately 1.4m3/ha.
Source 1
Source 1 is a 6,500 ha block in the Hawkes Bay district of the North Island. This is a predominately Red and Silver Beech forest with small distributions of Podocarps and minor species such as Tawa, Rewarewa and Hinau. It's altitude ranges from 600m to 1000m and has a temperate climate which produces Red beech trees of up to 30m in height and diameters of 2-3m through, and Silver beech of up to 20m high and diameters typically 1m through. The allowed annual production under an approved Sustainable management plan is 9000 cubic meters of Red Beech and 4500 cubic meters of Silver Beech. The silver Beech species due to its variation of colour relative to the south island supply have been ascribed commercial names rose beech for it's heart wood and Salmon Beech for it's sap wood. The timbers have beautifully rich colours with a hardness attributed to excellent flooring material. See our products page.
Source 2
Source 2 is distributed over some 70,000 ha on the western side of the South Island and ranges in altitude from 100m to 900m. It is dominated by Hard beech (West Coast Gold) and Red beech and again with a moderate climate produces trees of slightly smaller size to source 1. Annual production under a management plan is 1.45m3/ha per year. These timbers are also very hard and are suitable for flooring, furniture and panelling. Colouring in these species range from straw (West coast Gold) to a rich medium Red (West Coast Red). See our products page.
Source 3
Source 3 covers 18,000 ha of mainly Silver beech forest at the southern end of the south island. The altitude of this block ranges from 300m to 800m and has a cooler climate. Tree sizes are around 20m high with a diameter range of 0.6 to 1.2m through. Annual production for this source under it's management plan is 1.2m3/ha per year. Due to its colour and appearance these timbers make beautiful furniture and panelling products. See Waitutu Silver under our products page.
