The Ashburton Trading Society (ATS) was formed in 1963 by a group of farmers who recognised that a farmers' buying organisation would assist in keeping farmers' costs to a minimum. This caters for the needs of farmers predominantly in the greater Mid Canterbury District.

Farmlands Trading Society Limited (Farmlands) is one of New Zealand's premier rural supply companies, formed in 1962.
