FaxAbility is a service provided by Telecom that gives your single phone line two numbers, each with a distinctive ring. One ring is for fax, one for voice. Your modem can be set up to distinguish between the two rings, allowing it to answer fax calls only, and ignore voice. This is very convenient for people who receive several faxes a day, as they no longer have the problem of picking up the phone when the incoming fax is actually a fax call.

4.3. How to set up Bitware to answer fax calls, but to ignore voice calls.
1. Under setup/receive, set the answer mode to Distinctive Rings.
2. Click on Distinctive on the right hand side
3. Set Type1 to fax, and Type2 to manual.
4.4. After following the above steps, the modem is still answering voice calls.
Under setup/receive/advanced/initialise modem, append -SDR=1 to the existing init string.
4.5. The modem is still having a problem with FaxAbility. How to establish that the modem is indeed handling distinctive ring and that the software I am using to answer incoming calls is the problem.
FaxAbility problems are often due to the software, rather than the modem. To check that the modem is recognising the incoming calls, do the following:
1. Using a terminal programme such as Bitcom or Hyperterminal, enter the command AT&F-SDR=7.
2. Dial into the fax number. The terminal programme should display RING1, RING1.
3. Dial into the voice number. The terminal programme should display RING2, RING2.
To check that the modem is detecting fax rings but ignoring voice rings, do the following:
1. Using a terminal programme such as Bitcom or HyperTerminal, enter the command AT&F-SDR=1.
2. Dial into the fax number. The terminal programme should display RING1, RING1.
3. Dial into the voice number. The terminal programme should not display any RING information.
If this does not occur, then the modem may be at fault, or FaxAbility itself may not be installed on the line or be out of service on your local exchange. Contact Telecom - if FaxAbiltiy is operating, contact Dynalink Tech Support.
4.6. How to set up MSFax /MSExchange for distinctive ring.
These software packages do not support distinctive ring. Your options: use the software provided with your modem, or purchase a product such as WinFax Pro 9, which does support distinctive ring.
There is a work-around. Under start/settings/control panel/modems/properties/connection/advanced/extra settings, add -SDR=1. This bypasses the software, and sets up the modem directly to answer fax calls and ignore voice. Please note: Dynalink Modems does not support Microsoft Fax.
4.7. How to setup WinFax Pro/MSPhone for distinctive ring.
Click start - settings - control panel - modems - properties - distinctive ring:
Set Single Ring to Fax Only.
Set Double Ring to Unspecified.
