The
market is a bustling, colourful place to spend a leisurely Saturday
or Sunday. Over 120 artists and craftspeople offer unique New Zealand
craft for sale-great for gifts of a special memento of a trip to
Christchurch. There's something for everyone.
Have
a snack or or lunch at the International Food Fair, or stop awhile
and enjoy the live entertainment between 12 and 2pm. Street buskers
and people watching are optional extras!
The
Arts Centre is one of New Zealand's most significant historic and
cultural attractions. Once the original University of Canterbury,
these distinctive Gothic Revival buildings are now a dynamic venue
for arts, shopping and entertainment. More than forty specialty
shops and studios are housed here, as well as art galleries, theaters,
cinemas, cafes, restaurants and bars.
Each
weekend there's the Art and Craft Market, top local entertainment,
and an International Food Fair offering delicious tastes from around
the world. An exciting programme of festivals, concert and events
is also held year round. Must see historical features include the
Den Of Noble Prize winning scientists Ernerst Lord Rutherford, the
Oldest Lecture Hall in New Zealand, the Great Hall (complete with
magnificent stained glass window) and the Townsend Observatory with
its working telescope.
The
Arts Centre is open seven days a week and has free entry. Start

Cathedral Square down Worcester Boulevard on the tram route opposite
the Canterbury Museum, the Robert McDougall Art Gallery and the
Botanic Gardens.
