The BRM 2 in use

The BRM 2 Brain Monitor

The BRM 2 Brain Monitor has been designed for use with both term and pre-term infants:

Term Infants

Approximately 1% of infants born at normal term suffer from asphyxia at birth. The BRM 2 Brain Monitor can be used both to detect and monitor any resulting injury and also to detect and monitor the seizures that affect many of these infants. This makes it ideal as a screening tool for possible neuroprotective strategies.

It can also be used continuously over a period of days in order to detect seizures and monitor the effect of anticonvulsant drugs given to treat them.

Pre-Term Infants

The BRM 2 Brain Monitor also has modes that have shown promise in the detection of White Matter Injury in pre-term infants, through the use of the EEG parameter Spectral Edge Frequency. Research into the use of this parameter is continuing.

The BRM 2 can also be used to detect seizures in this patient group.

Key Features

The BRM 2 Brain Monitor is a bedside electroencephalograph (EEG) and has the following key features:

- Provides a clear indication of current neurological status and any electrographic seizure events. - Performs both short and long trend analysis to aid in treatment and prognosis.

- Easy for clinical staff to use and interpret

- Designed for continuous use in the busy NICU environment.

- Portable and small enough to fit alongside an infant warmer or incubator.

The BRM 2 has been designed to be:

Practical

- Convenient and straightforward mode selection.

- Easily upgradable to incorporate new features.

- Provides real-time feedback to assist in the application of therapies.

- Records high-quality digital files for later analysis or review.

- Provides summary printouts for patient records.*

- Sensor contact impedance indicator to assist sensor application.

Focused

• Specifically designed for neonates.

• Makes use of a specialised sensor array with the following advantages:

- Unique hydrogel layer adheres safely to delicate skin while providing excellent electrical contact.

- Comfortable and flexible cloth backing conforms to the shape of the infant's head.

- Easily positioned using Sensor Positioning Aid

Powerful

- Review function allows the clinician to look at specific areas of a trace in detail

- Digital files generated for individual patients

- Facility to download files from monitor for off-line analysis or permanent storage.

- Printable screens*.

- Flexible event marking facility.

- Highly resistant to electrical interference and noise.

- Login and password protection for data security.

- Has both long- and short-term trend displays to assist in determining changes of status over time.

* printer not included Specific Parameters

The BRM 2 Brain Monitor displays a number of specific parameters that may be used to assess patients, including:

- Amplitude-integrated EEG (aEEG) - both bi-lateral and cross-cerebral

- EEG Waveform - Spectral Edge Frequency

- Integrated Amplitude

Display selection is convenient and straightforward. Files are recorded in digital format and can be viewed in real time or studied in detail, in order to assist in the application of therapies. It is also possible to review traces and to cross-compare different parameters while still recording.
