About "Our place"

Located on the edge of the township of Waihi, "Riverside" enjoys a rural outlook and seclusion and yet is a mere ten minute stroll from the business centre of the village. All guests are welcome to relax in our Spa pool and so rest their weary traveller's limbs.

The guest area is a largely self contained unit with a small dining room-lounge and a kitchen with a microwave oven so that visitors can feel free to prepare light meals should that be desired. There are twin beds in the bedroom and these can be pushed together to make a very comfortable king-sized double bed. The ensuite contains a shower and toilet. A television set and midi sound system are located in the lounge and there is a second lounge which is attached to the Spa area. This area is common to the house and the unit and is a place where we would like our guests to feel very much at home and where we can meet and "commune".

We regard ourselves as relatively seasoned travellers and enjoy nothing more than swapping experiences with folk from within New Zealand and from other lands. For the sports lovers we would be delighted to arrange a game of golf or tennis, a spot of fishing ( trout or snapper ), a bush walk or a visit to any of the number of crafts people in the area who practise their skills and sell their wares on site.

Directions to the establishment:

Just before you leave Waihi and head towards Tauranga take the last turn to the right into Adams street, turn left into Rosemont Rd and left into Riverbank Tce. "Riverside" is the last house in the road.

Spend time in Waihi, the gateway to the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula. Make it an end point rather then a through point.

Waihi itself is rich in European history as its early development was a result of the discovery of  gold deposits here at the end of last century. The gold mining industry went into decline in the early 50's but has since been revived with the advent of open mine casting techniques. The town is also the centre of a diverse agricultural and pastoral industry as well as being the home of a number of light industrial enterprises. Its location at the south eastern end of the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula also means that it is rapidly becoming an important tourist center. It is an easy two hour drive from Auckland's International Airport and two hours motoring to the south will bring the visitor to the tourist Mecca of Rotorua. It must be said however that with the number of attractive places to visit between Waihi and Rotorua, any visitor would wish to allow much more time than that just mentioned.

Local Points of Interest:

The Cornish Pump House

This imposing ruin is a symbol of Waihi's past, present and future. It was erected at the turn of the century to a house a beam engine that would pump water from the mine. It is many years since it was used for that purpose but it still dominates the town and stands right beside the present mining operation.

Waihi Golf Club

This course is said to be one of the most picturesque in the region and there are many courses to choose from. It is open all year round and visitors are welcome. Green fees are currently NZ$20.00 per round. Clubs may be hired from the club professional.

Waihi Beach

The picture shows the north end of Waihi beach. The beach stretches some 15 km to the south in an unspoiled expanse of clean white sand. It is a favourite spot for "surfies" and family groups because the pacific ocean provides safe swimming for all ages. Many local amateur fisherman launch their boats from this spot and off-shore waters provide good sport.

Waihi Boat Charter

Lew and Ali Sayers provide excellent fishing from their boat "ALI J". At the very reasonable charge of NZ$70.00 per person they will provide lines and bait, give a full days fishing and guarantee a catch. Their well equipped and speedy boat will take you to Mayor Island where the big ones are and you can be sure of a great days fishing. (see the photos for evidence).

Booking ahead is essential and all sailings are subject to weather conditions.

Goldfields Railway

When a new railway tunnel was opened through the Kaimai Ranges in 1980 the line from Paeroa to Katikati became redundant. A section from Waihi to Waikino has been preserved and the vintage train runs daily from mid September until mid July. It offers an attractive journey into the past and the 14km run takes the visitor to the entrance of the Karangahake gorge and back. (One way trips are quite acceptable). This is a must for train buffs

Karangahake Walk Way

We recommend to all our guests the walkway through the gorge. The track takes you on an easy walk through native bush, past old gold-mining sites and close to the rushing stream water. A twenty minute stroll brings you to the bed of the old railway line and a sharp left turn at that point takes you through a 1km long disused railway tunnel and back to your starting point. If you don't take that option you can follow the "railway line" until you reach the beautiful Owharoa Falls at the other end of the walk.
