The Octant

The Southern Celestial Pole lies in Octans, just as the Northern Celestial Pole lies in Ursa Minor. Unlike Polaris in the north, though, no bright star lies near the Southern Pole. This hasn't prevented the star Sigma Octantis being rather optimistically named 'Polaris Australis' or 'The Southern Pole Star', but it is in fact only magnitude +5.5, and almost invisible to the eye.

IC 4333

Not a lot is know about IC 4333 it is a very small sprial galaxy in the constellation of octans and as the image above shows from a distance IC 4333 is not very clear. the galaxies Co-ordinates are Right Ascension: 14 05 00.0 & Declination: 84 16 00. The photo magnitude of the galaxy is 1.8'X0.4'.

IC 4864

IC 4864 is a small spiral galaxy in octans at a magnitude of 1.8' This faint galaxy is not that clear. The galaxies Co-ordinates are Right Ascension: 19 40 06.0 & Declination: -77 33 00. The photo magnitude of the galaxy is 1.8:'

NGC 2573

Galaxy NGC 2573 In the constellation of Octans. The galaxies Co-ordinates are Right Ascension: 01 41 42.8 & Declination: -89 20 04. The magnitude of the galaxy is 2.0'X0.8'.

NGC 6438

Very large, coarse cluster, large and small stars over an area 1.2° across (larger than U2 indicates). More like a chance association, but it is the most ‘dense’ field for a 12° circle around here. Sixteen stars down to 9th magnitude counted here; several stars together in 2s. mel227 Co-ordinates are Right Ascension: 20 12.1 & Declination: -79 19. The magnitude is 05.3 other names for Mel227 are Cr411.
