The Story
Ed Crane (Billy Bob Thornton) goes
about the business of cutting hair with a stoic resignation. A barber in
the dead-end town of Santa Rosa, California in 1949, Ed is stuck in a rut
and has no clue how to get out.
And then Creighton Tolliver (Jon Polito)
enters his barber shop. Creighton sees the future and it's called dry cleaning.
All he needs is a willing investor.
When Ed suspects that his bookkeeper wife,
Doris (Frances McDormand) is having an affair with her boss, Big
Dave (James Gandolfini), Ed's thoughts turn to blackmail and worse.
